I agree with Ray, and everyone else who has commented on this book.
It is excellent in content and photos! As for photo quality, I
believe the computer age and Desktop Publisher have not been kind to
the railroad book publishing industry. Otto Perry's B&W photos have
appeared in numerous high quality hardcover books over the years and
they were always clear, sharp and crisp, with excellent contrast.
Now with computer imaging, a lot of his photos appear muddled and
fuzzy with strange light & dark areas within the picture and look
like they came off a fax machine. Color reproduction has also
suffered- with some photos looking like they came off an old
television set that had the Color & Contrast knobs turned to the max.
Very unnatural indeed. In fairness, maybe some photos used in recent
books were very marginal in quality to begin with and computer
imagery made them better but I have had several recent all-color
releases on other railroads in the store (not being commercial- just
proving a point)- that were big disappointments because all the
photos looked like they came off that old TV set. Some publishers,
like Hundman and a few others, are still holding the line on photo
reproduction quality, and it sure stands out when you can side by
side compare several different books and publishers at once. Am I
off-base on my thinking? If the loss of quality is due to holding
down printing costs, I would gladly pay a few more bucks and get a
better book.
