Indeed CF&I had the bulk of the western market BUT U.S.S. did sell to
western RR's inc. the Q (just ck track charts or go look on the side
of rails on Lines East). One reason U.S.S. would not have been shut
out is that some western RR's hauled coal/coke to mills in the
Chicago/Gary area plus U.S.S.'s dominance in the industry going back
to Carnegie and J. Pierpont Morgan. The Hill Roads had financial ties
to this Eastern money going back to Forbes & Joy.
The Q had a unique rail weight/web made for them by CF&I and different
than any other commercial rail. It was 1 of only a couple RR's that
had their own unique size (PRR being one other). Gerald
PS - the 39' length became a standard when 40' became standard for frt
cars inc. flats. Earlier rail was even shorter. Also, if piling rail
alongside your track, have some ties as well. Q had a standard for
this with the ties perpendicular to the track. Pieces of shorter rail
would also be present to fill in.
