There are three files posted in the "Files" section you probably want
to check out (you can also download these to your own computer).

First, in regard to power pooling arrangements, check out the Excel
Spreadsheet entitled "CB&Q Pooled Power.xls". I have been trying to
note as many pictures of CB&Q power pools as possible, primarily in
the 60's as I model 1967/68 through Savanna, IL (so I am most
interested in the Twin Cities to Chicago power pools) . Note that
there are no pools with the NP, but the Q did lease some NP F3's
during 1966-67. As I recall, most of the use of those NP units was on
night trains, so few photos exist. 

There is little evidence of GN equipment showing up on Q trains out of
the Twin Cities prior to the merger that I have found, except for a
pool arrangement between 1959 and 1963 on one train. The pictures I
have found show mostly GN FT's with one or two F3's showing up
occasionally. Most pool power between Chicago and Twin Cities was NYC,
later a mix of PC, NYC, and PRR (there are even some pictures of pure
NYC lashups on Q freights headed to the Twin Cities).

One interesting point to note, however, is that units being delivered
to the GN/NP from EMD or GE many times traveled over the Q for
delivery. For example, there is footage from Emory Goulash on one of
the Top Frog videos showing a brand new Big Sky Blue GN U33C in a Q
consist heading west from Chicago. It was not pool power, simply being
delivered. It does however give an excuse to have GN Big Sky Blue
power on a Q westbound freight (in fact, I'm still looking for a good
price on an Atlas U33C in GN sky blue of anyone knows of one - hint,
hint).

In regard to the number of trains, check out the files entitled "CB&Q
Freight Trains Map ? Eastbound ? June 1, 1967" and "CB&Q Freight
Trains Map ? Westbound ? June 1, 1967". This will give you an idea of
the number of scheduled freights to, from, and through Savanna, IL and
to and from the Twin Cities. Remember, there were also wayfreights
(locals) that are not shown on this map, but also there were extras
that ran rather frequently, especially the iron ore and taconite
trains that ran from the GN and DM&IR in the Twin Cities over the Q to
Chicago and other steel mills. These used Q power, however, out of the
Twin Cities. For further reference, you might want to try to find a
CB&Q Employee Timetable (ETT) for the La Crosse Division (I
believe)and I can also highly recommend the Data Sheets book from the
BRHS as it lists the Q scheduled freights and their blocking and
interchange points.
