I've been going through my collection of "Zephyrs" (the original by
the Q) dating from 1939-1960ish. The nice thing is that twice a year
they show the sleepers assigned to each train (in terms of type, not
specific names). But, in each spring issue, they also show a number
of tour groups slated to go that year or sponsoring trips. Too, each
year there are lots of stories of dude ranches and skiing trips. All
this is for the benefit of the travel agents and such - but, as you
say, the passenger department certainly was not leaving any
opportunity on the table.
There are no end of special circumstances - the commuter who is
listed in the 1950's who had been commuting daily from Riverside
since 1893 - and after the special ceremonies for him, he worked late
(until 9pm) to make up for the lost time (he was in his
80's). Another had traveled from Aurora for over 50 years. There
were the Twins, and various homey stories of employees - all to
convince the travelling public that the Burlington was THE way to go West.
