Trailing the Heartland Flyer on Saturday, March 4, 2006, was the former
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad business car Burlington, now named
Mississippi River.
The Burlington was the business car of the legendary Harry C. Murphy, who
served as CB&Q President from September 1, 1949 thru September 30, 1965. Mr.
Murphy was very pro-passenger train, and it was under his watch that the
Burlington purchased the last new stem-to-stern privately-operated American
passenger train, the Vista-Dome Denver Zephyr of 1956.
Under Murphy, passenger service on the Burlington was operated with
enthusiasm. Besides its regular service, the railroad promoted specials for
school children and other groups. I remember seeing one of the ads for these
services on a bulletin board when I was in Junior High in 1961-1964.
Let's hope that Mr. Murphy's pro-passenger spirit, through his business car,
brings luck to the Heartland Flyer.
