A cow hide weighs on average 70lbs. Now imagine it being wet and slimy, with
lots of greasy "stuff" hanging from it. Add the smell. Then picture loading
a box car, one hide at a time after it has been salted down. Not an easy
task. And remember hide then layer of salt, hide then salt. That is how the
cars were loaded.
The meat plant in Estherville, Iowa would keep the hides in a basement room
where they were salted down for 30 days. Then loaded and shipped, often to a
tannery who would turn them into leather. In later years the plant began
soaking hides in a salt brine for 24 hours then shipping them out, again in
boxcars. Imagine loading that hide after it had been soaking in salt brine.
