I totally agree with you John, it was a great day at Dave's but also a sad one
for me. In January of 2000 Dave, myself and about 8 others gathered in Dave's
basement to start building the B&MR RR, 18 months later we were driving the
last spike and running trains. For those of you that don't know Dave and his
family are moving to Savannah GA in January and starting Monday the railroad
will be dismantled. If you never got to see Dave's layout you really missed a
great layout. Thanks for a great time Dave, you will truly be missed here in
St. Louis.

Subject: [CBQ] Thanks to Dave Lotz & the B&MR Lines
My good bud John Jacobs & I were fortunate to be guests of Dave and his
family at the "last run day" of Dave's Burlington & Missouri River
Galesburg-Creston layout today in south St. Louis.
A few observations on the visit to Dave's and our subsequent trip north on
MO-79 north along the K Line....
- John got his first experience of operating a sound/DCC equipped freight ...
two SD7 blackbirds on the point.
- being able to shoot 350+ digital photos of the layout (hey, I need the
inspiration).
- swapping Q stories with fellow fans as the aforementioned SD7 powered
freight was assigned an SW1 helper on the climb to West Burlington.
- being able to tell about my chance encounter with fellow Q-lister Arch
Hayden last week.
- watching the Denver Zephyr having to make a double stop at Burlington. The
consist was so large, there was no other way.
- Being chastised by the B&MR President for swapping sea stories with a
fellow Q enthusiast in attendance (and retired Navy type, like myself) instead
of talking trains.
- Having a Galesburg flashback when I saw Dave's model of the coaling tower
with two S4 Hudsons awaiting servicing.
- Stopping by a certain hobby shop off of I-70 and Zumbehl ... they had a
large bookcase full of used railroad books (including two copies of Diesels
West) for sale. Found a darned near mint condition Holbrook/Lorenz edition of
'Waycars of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy' for $16!!!! Doesn't get much
better than that.
- Why is is that when I am in Palmyra, I hear oodles of traffic running on
the K Line, but when ever I try and railfan it, I usually draw a big zero? We
saw two trains from a distance ... oh well!
I think I can safely speak for John on this ... thanks to Diana, Jake and
Dave for a great day!
Regards,
John Lewis
