Ok guys here is my new mix for F-unit gray.
Ready?
Here it comes.
ModelFlex Antique White.
Future floor polish for a gloss coat.
Your fave flat coat. Some times I like Microcaot Flat or I mix it with some
gloss to make a semi-gloss.
Decals. Hmmmmm. Let's see. I went through 8 sets of microscale before they
curled so much I stripped the ABBA FTs down to thier plastic again.
Microscale tells me that they had a bad run of RED ink. so all the new artwork
sets are bad. They fracture in the water or on the shell.
Remember Humpty Dumpty???
And guess what? Decal saver doesn't help them either. It turns the red frosty,
slightly less red than they should be.
It's enough to make you model Penn Central.
I have an older set without the porthole gaskets that I found that may
work. We'll see but don't expect to see anything from me at Dubuque, I'm working
on freight cars.

From the Feb. 1986 issue of MR - "Paint Shop" by George Drury:
The author states that he mixed "4 parts of Reefer White and 1 part Reefer
Gray, so I mixed it and sprayed it on. It looked far too dark.
...decided that I wanted a warm off-white. I diluted my gray mixture half
and half with white, making it about 9 parts Reefer White to 1 of Reefer
Gray. Then I added a few drops of Floquil Caboose Red to warm the color,
but not enough to turn it pink. When I gave the bodies a second coat, the
lighter color seemed right."
I agree - it looks right to me also.

Can someone suggest to me on what paint or blend of paints comes close
to the Q freight F unit color? The Modelflex 16-193 CBQ Imitation
Aluminum looked too dark when I matched a swatch with Athearn and
Intermountain units. I seem to remember MR having a paint shop article
long ago (80s) concerning the color. TIA
