Back during the 80's I visited the Portola RR museum in California.
Two of these tank cars were on display and I was able to get a number
of measurements and photos. Then the BRHS came out with a data sheet
concerning this tank, a TM-3, and that made the building of this
interesting car a nice project.

The ends are solid brass with a 10 foot arc. Inside center has a
drilled hole for a brass tube to be inserted between each end. On this
tube were circular rings to hold the wrap around sheets. Sort of like
the old way of building model aircraft fuselage. Center beam is brass
channel as is the end framing. I made a mistake in getting the end
ladders correctly spaced. The top of the ladder holding the plank
walkway should have had it's inside corner right at the outer edge of
the tank sheet. Mine wasn't. It was a little too far inboard. So
adjustments had to be made to come out right with the hand rail
vertical pieces the length of the tank.

Two items need to be made to complete. Note in the photos the castings
on the truck bolster lower plate where it extends out from the end
frame. I think I have it figured out how to mill them. Also there were
lengths of wood chafing pieces on the tops of the center beams under
the tank.

The trucks are San Juan P48 and arch bars are correct for this car
until about 1938 when arch bars were banned from interchange.

This is also posted on the Yahoo P48 site.
