Although this is CB&Q list, I'll add to this subject. The "St. Paul
Company" is what it was known as until it went bankrupt in the 1920's. The
official name was Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad at that time.
In 1927, a new company was incorporated in Wisconsin that was known as the
Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad which was known as "The
Milwaukee Company". This company bought the assets and assumed some of the
debt of "The St. Paul Company. I will research this and see if that is
when they adopted "The Milwaukee Road" slogan for advertising. Of course
"The Milwaukee Company" filed for bankruptcy again in 1935.

Did you know that when the ICC approved the merger of NP, GN and CB&Q, they
stipulated that the CM&StP, at their option, could join in the merger if
they felt they would be at a competitive disadvantage? Well, CM&StP
thought they could make it on their own and when they found themselves
struggling, they went to the ICC and asked for inclusion to the merger.
The response they got was that the ICC now felt they needed another
railroad to compete with the BN and that "The Milwaukee Road" was that
railroad. They denied the request and the rest is history.

In financial circles, it was called the "St. Paul"
until very recent times.
