Hi Jan,

I?ve got a few minutes to kill tonight, so I?ll start with the #35?

A-2 No. 359 was rebuilt at the Denver Shops in 6-32 for the Century of
Progress exhibition and was renumbered B&MRR 35. No date on when it was
lettered for CB&Q, but obviously before 1938.

No. 359 was originally Hannibal & St. Joe No. 66, built in the CB&Q?s Aurora
Shops in 1892. Because many of the ?Burlington Lines? used common
terminals, and each had its own numbering system, many opportunities existed
for two (or more) locomotives with the same number to be at the same
terminal causing much confusion. So, in 1989, the individual railroads of
the Burlington System adopted the numbering scheme shown on page 251 of
Corbin?s book. As you can see, the H.& St. J. was assigned 601-700, so many
of the locomotives were renumbered by simply adding a 6 in front of their
existing number. This was the case with No. 66, becoming No. 666.

Then, for the 1904 consolidation, the 1323 locomotives on the combined roads
were renumbered, with the H.&St.J. NO. 666 becoming CB&Q No. 359. I?m sure
that if investigated deeply enough, a logical method was used for this
renumbering.

I'm having a really difficult time trying to figure out how to look up a
specific American locomotive from Corbin's book...this is one area where
it's very confusing. Part of the problem was that the early locomotives
came from everywhere, were renumbered a few times, and knowing
when/what/where is half of the battle...

What I'm trying to do is add more detailed information on each of the
4-4-0s that I have photos for...maybe someone can tell me how to easily
decipher which engine is what? :)

Cheers!
