I worked in the car dept for seveal years. Working in the shop
was a lifestyle change too. I was on the wrecking crew and overtime
board. I was always getting called to come to work. Railroads are
always short of shop personal. And if the economy takes a dip you
can count on being furloughed. I will say that is was the job I
loved the most and even though I don't work in the trade anymore I
still consider myself a railroader. And there were times I hated
the job, the management everything. But I was back there bright and
early the next day for the start of my shift.
Working in any craft is heavy bull work. If you think about it
there is nothing light. Replacing coupler, knuckles and even
straighting handhold are hard work. Replacing brake shoes requires 1
or even 2 bars to get them in.
When all was said and done, and I was watching a rollby on an
outbound train that I worked on. I got a satisfaction that there
were no bad orders and that every was in good shape.
