When the Canadian potash was moving it wanted to keep moving.

Arguably these were some of the WORST braking trains ever invented
my man. If a guy wanted to keep from gettin' fired or, possibly
more important, stay alive you quickly learned that, quite often,
your best train handling tricks just didn't work with these things.

The equipment looked pretty sad and the appliances on the cars were
suspect. Since potash attracts and holds moisture one can imagine
what the cars looked like after a few years in this service.

Listing the "best" all-time lousy braking trains potash would come
pretty near the 1 or 2 spot.

As Steve mentioned some potash came "around the horn" from Savanna.
Many of these trains terminated at Mendota and the material was sold
directly from the cars. This was always an interesting job for the
Mendota switch engine. Other trains that operated via the C&I were
delivered to connecting railroads in the Chicago area.
