According the BN 1977-1980 Annual the following were the "Last of
Their Breed"
Last Chinese Red Unit: GP9 #1960 repainted at Livingston 12/29/76
Last Black/Grey Unit: NW2 #559 repainted at Chicago 9/29/76
Last Q Silver Unit: E8s 9973, 9967, 9972 & 9976 repainted by M-K in
May-June 1976.
Last Q experimental green unit: U23C 5206 repainted at Livingston
8/27/76
The unit numbers are the BN numbers, not the Q numbers.
The Annual also lists the last of the other pre-merger roads units
to be painted.
So, as others have pointed out have mixed paint schemes would be
prototypical into 1976, with the exception of the E units
