CB&N began ops in 1886 and was absorbed officially in 1899. Although
financed by the same interests as those of the CB&Q and with heavy Q
control, there was some independence to the chagrin of the Q as CB&N
mgt got a little too agressive on frt rates via-a-vis the Milw and
C&NW which Q had a gentleman's agreement with. Dick Overton gives
this excellent coverage in Burlington Route. Perkins did not have all
the control he wanted at times but for competitive reasons a
semblance of CB&N independence had to be maintained to keep Q's
competitors at bay.
The other brewerys in LaCrosse were Peerless and LaCrosse although to
be honest (it's late & the Packer loss affects my memory!) it may be
Peerless was a LaCrosse Brewery brand. (Potosi Beer @ Potosi later
got the rights to the Peerless name)
It should be noted too that during the 20 yrs Q & RI ea owned 50% of
Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern, a # of CB&N mgrs worked on the N
end of BCR&N & influenced its operating practices. During those 20
yrs BCR&N cabooses were listed as waycars (per Q practice) in the
Official Equipment Registers, they reverted to 'cabooses' when Q sold
its share to RI.
Good luck on the paper Sam! Coming to the LaCrosse RR show later
this month? I could bring some CB&N things along. Gerald
