In BB#11 on Creston, Hol writes, ?By the end of the 19th Century,
double-tracking had already progressed as far west as Murray, 21 miles east
of Creston? In January 1900 the Q incorporated the Murray & Creston Railroad
Company to build and operate an all new double track from Murray to
Creston?it completed its assignment in November and December 1901.? He goes
on to say ?Double-tracking and relocation of the mainline west of Creston
all the way to Pacific Junction, continued through the next several years??
Therefore, the statement that The CBQ was mostly single track west of
Galesburg" is false.
In reviewing the track alignment charts for the Ottumwa and Creston
Divisions, the CB&Q mainline was double-tracked from MP 205 at Burlington
all the way to Milepost 444, just west of Red Oak. It was single track with
passing sidings at McPherson, Emerson, Hastings, Malvern and began double
track again at MP 466.5 just East of Balfour, Iowa and was that way to
Pacific Junction at MP 475.
I know the dates when this segment was single-tracked are documented in the
Bulletins, but I can?t remember where.
