From what I could see when I was at school at VTI/SIU (65-66), the only
service to this operation was by the IC. By this time the line just went to
some ware houses and IIRC were private operations. I do not believe there
was any rail service to any of the still active ordnance plants, the trucks
got all of this. One weekend, that I gone home, one of the bomb storage
place blew up. The guys in the dorm said it shook pretty good and that they
found some piece from the blast out by the parking lot.
One weekend a year in the fall the government would open up some of the
roads on the Crab Orchard Refuge for a self guided tour. I don't know how
many miles of track were back in there. They did make sure you did not get
off the marked tour route!
