DesPlaines Hobbies just got their AT&SF Shaddowline decals.
They are packed with the shaddowlining decal (a separate sheet) behind the
sheet with the car names and other lettering on it.
I managed to tap the top sheet aside on the N Scale version enough to see
the striping sheet...and it is less than acceptable. The shaddow line
effect is a black line with squiggles under it.....it may be better than
nothing but doesn't look anything like shaddow lining. Maybe it looks
better on a carside....
I did the artwork for the Kato AT&SF "Valley" series cars, and even though
the factory simplified it, the shaddow lining looked effective enought that
everbody that saw the preproduction bodies were "fingering" the bodies
thinking they were preproduction models of the Budd cars. The Kato cars
were done with a couple of lighter gray stripes under the black one.... a
full graduation of black to almost silver is possible with most printing
processes, even in N.
Another complaint is that the stripes are not long enough for an 80'
car....making a multi match will be a pain on smoothside cars.
