Jeff,
Start your visit at 7th/P, the depot was re-novated years ago and it looks
great but all the benches were removed. I sure wonder what happended to them.
The old steamer at the depot and the NE-12 have been mentioned. The interior
of the caboose was removed for dining but the outside is in good condition.
At the yard out on West O street (Roundhouse/West O st) go over the bridge BN
built over their track or better yet stop on top of it for a camera shot of
the old turn table and the old roundhouse. There are about 5 or 6 stalls left
but the roundhouse
was resided years ago and covers everything. BNSF still uses the turntable.
About a year ago I saw them turn a MAC70 around, in less than 40 seconds.
The Havelock Shops for the most part are still standing as they were since
the mid 60's, at least for what I can remember. That is located in the
northeast
part of Lincoln, at 66th/Burlington Ave. From downtown the best way to tell
tourist how to get there is to take the main street which is O street east to
70th, turn left and head north for about 42 blocks, just two blocks north of
Havelock Ave. You can't miss it.
All the old towers are gone. A couple of overpasses made of concrete still
have the "Burlington Route" on them. That's it in a nutshell on the nickel tour.
If you have time and you spot one of the old fossils still working in the
shops or yard they usually will answer questions about specific stuff.
One other thing that most never mention. The "California Cafe" was a cafe
just south of the Havelock Shops. About 5 years ago I stopped in there since
the
front door was open. This little cafe used to serve the employees of the
Havelock Shops especially steam crews. The original owner is long gone but his
two
daughters ran it for years.
They too are old and I don't think they serve food there anymore. It's like
stopping back into the 30's inside there. One of the sisters talked about old
Lucky Lindbergh who learned to fly in Lincoln. He would solo around Lincoln and
land his plane right outside Havelock and have breakfast there. He signed a
photograph of himself and it is on the wall. It was among a bunch of old steam
pictures.
Outside it looks just like a big house with an old wooden sign in black/white
which says California Cafe.

Have fun,
Scott Arnold
Lincoln NE
