Greetings listees:
I'm helping my father gather data to go with his reminiscences of working for
Burlington Escorted Tours in the summer of 1941. I have the appropriate
brochure listing all the tours that summer but am lacking some general and
timetable information. The questions at this point are:
1. Did tours have their own tourist sleepers? Possibly so, but were they
different from regular Pullmans? The brochure generally references berths in
Pullmans and Tourist Pullmans with some of the longer and pricier tours listing
compartments and drawing rooms. I note Bulletin No. 42 Exposition Flyer page
98 references "special tourist Pullmans" for a Feb.-March 1941 ski trip to
Colorado. The same page references regular and escorted tours in the first two
sections of the first-ever three-section train with all-Diesel power but
doesn't specify the cars.
2. How did Yellowstone tourist cars get to/from Cody off the Denver-Billings
line?
3. I'd like to identify the trains his tours might have used:
Black Hills and Yellowstone
Leave Chicago 12:35 p.m. via Omaha and Lincoln, arrive Newcastle Wyoming 2:30
p.m. next day. Leave Newcastle 2:30 p.m. Friday, arrive Gardiner, Wyoming,
10:30 a.m. next day on Northern Pacific. Return via Cody, Wyoming, depart 7:45
a.m. Tuesday to Billings and Northern Pacific arrive Chicago 8:45 a.m.
Tuesday.
Black Hills
Similar to above except depart Newcastle 3:30 p.m. heading back to
Lincoln/Omaha, arrive Chicago 7:55 p.m. Sunday.
Denver, Colorado Springs, Rocky Mountain National Park
Depart Chicago 12:35 p.m. (Exposition Flyer), arrive Denver 8:20 a.m., quick
transfer to DRGW arrive Colorado Springs 10:40 a.m. Leave Denver 8:00 p.m.,
arrive Chicago 7:55 p.m.
Some tours (not necessarily his) clearly used the Empire Builder and North
Coast Limited to access Glacier and Yellowstone. Tourists from St. Louis
either
went to Chicago (dep. St. Louis 2:45 p.m., your choice of 4:25 or 4:30 p.m.
Return 1:20 p.m., 5:10 p.m., 9:20 p.m., 9:55 p.m.) or went via Kansas City to
Lincoln on through Pullmans departing at 2:45 p.m. (General Pershing Zephyr?)
I'll try to hunt up the appropriate timetables next time I get to a show or
feel flush enough to resume trolling eBay. Until the, any help appreciated.
Regards,
Bill Diven
