Hi Bob,

I'll take a stab at this and then you can read what answers "real"
railroaders will tell you..LOL.

EMD diesel motors (note correct "Q" usage) four (4) controls to
operate the motors...

1. Throttle..8 notches...controls prime mover (i.e. diesel motor)

2. Reverser..controls direction..has three positions - forward,
neutral, reverse.

3. Automatic Brake.. controls both the engine and train air brakes.

4. Independant Brake..controls just the locomotives' brakes.

This is a real basic explanation from my memory of opetating a
locomotive when I was a member of my local RR museum....
Hope this helps and is the answer your looking for.

remember from the 1950's had 2 control levers, a 4 position power
(volts, amps ?) control and a throttle (I think it had 8 notches).
Anyone have a short explanation on driving one of these or a link to
a site that has an engineers operating manual?
