I was headed to Des Moines Friday for a Saturday wedding and am just getting
around to going through my emails today. Sorry for the delayed posting.
Dave
Many of you who were at the BRHS spring meet at Oregon, Illinois, on April
17 were able to get a sneak preview of our new book, BURLINGTON'S ZEPHYRS. I
was unable to stay for the dinner, so my apologies if you did not get the
word about this new book. Here are the details.
The book is authored by Karl Zimmermann, who has done several books over the
years, including one on the CZ many years ago. This newest book covers the
entire Zephyr fleet (even the obscure Zephyr 9902 run between Chicago and
Hannibal) from 1934 into Amtrak. It is 156 pages, hardover, color and black
& white and sells for $34.95. It should be available at Barnes & Noble and
Borders book stores (and possibly well-stocked hobby shops) in late May or
in June. MBI Publishing Co. is the publisher and my own company is the
designer and producer.
Among many who assisted in the book's production was J. W. Schultz, who many
of you know is working on the ultimate Zephyr book series to be published by
Hundman Publishing. Our Zephyr book is a little more mainstream oriented,
but I'm sure all of you even hardcore Q fans will enjoy it and will keep
you busy until Mr. Schultz's eagerly anticipated book comes out.
Our book should not be confused with the similarly named BURLINGTON ZEPHYRS,
by John Kelly, expected out this fall from Iconografix. John's book is going
to be more of a pictorial.
Our own book features the photography of Jim Neubauer, Bob Schmidt, Karl
Zimmermann, Phil Weibler, Jim Boyd, George Speir, Jim Scribbins myself and
others as well as photos, art, and brochures from the Burlington, the Joe
Welsh Collection, and other sources. There are a number of photos that we
hardcore Q types have seen elsewhere, but remember that this book is aimed
at the mainstream audience. Nonetheless, there is a lot of really nice
material within that has never before been published.
