Doug: I believe that the Bartusch Packing that you listed for St. Paul, MN,
was the only place where they actually killed and dressed. All of the
others were branch distribution operations. I worked at Armour in 1951 and
do not remember Morris Refkin. In those years, there was a Cudahy plant
across the Mississippi in Newport.
The Armor and adjacent Swift plants were large major operations. The
stockyards were also huge, handling stock going to the farms and coming
back. Both Swift and Armour killed hogs, sheep, lambs and all of the beef
animals. Except for Hormel, all of the other packing plants in Minnesota
were small. Bartusch was 100% kosher.
