The correct name of the railroad that built from Burlington west was the
Burlington & Missouri River Rail Road. They, along with the City, were in
fact the original parties in the contract that is being tested in court. In
1872 the B&MRRR was leased and eventually bought by the CB&Q. The B&MR in
Nebraska was an entirely different organization. During Perkins tenure, the
CB&Q in Burlington received a total facelift. The downtown yards were
completely reworked, the Victorian Depot was built, the roundhouse
facilities just north of South Street were rebuilt, and the shops that were
in several buildings along the downtown yards were moved to the top of the
West Burlington Hill. The city, recognizing the importance of the 1858
contract, actually annexed the property from center of Mt. Pleasant Street
north so that the shops could be moved from downtown and still be located in
the city limits of Burlington. Reading the papers of the period provided an
interesting study in politics and attitudes of the day. Many were upset
that the city annexed all this land and basically "sold out" to the
railroad.
