Gentlemen,

As a modeler my heartbeat goes fast any time I see a post about "Sound".
I have sampled sounds of UP 3985 from certain videos with my computer and
loaded these into TWO sound decoders made by ESU (Germany). I use two
decoders because it is an articulated loco and one goes for each the fornt
and rear engine to simulate slight out of phase cuffs, but thats an other
story.
The result is an exciting and great sounding model of a Challenger and when
Quantum sound came out I was disappointed with the steam exhausts, my own
are much better.
So in my opinion it is a major duty for a historical society to cover it's
engines whistle sounds because they add so much personality to the railroad.
With the right sounds on hand it is not too difficult to convince decoder
makers to work them into their products so many modelers can profit. We
young guys who never saw steam have no idea how a O-2 might have sounded.
We are very accurate when we build our models but we don't take enough care
about sound. Just my two cents.

Florian
