This week there was some discussion regarding a grove of above
trees at Burgess Jct observed during a 1941 CB&Q excursion
trip. East of the West Burlington, Ia shop complex which is
almost closed now there was grove of these trees. I am not
sure when they were planted but back in the late 30s the
trees were 3 to 4" diameter at the ground and possibly
20 feet tall growing very strate toward the sky. The trees
were 5 to 6 feet apart in a area covering about 3 city
blocks Dont ever remember seeing the railroad or any logging
group cuttimg them. However I drove by the site today and
some of the trees are still there and look like they are
still alive. With no leaves due to winter conditions the
'elephant ears' are not there to be sure they are still
alive Some of the trees are dead of course and have fallen
over to lean into the live ones which are probably 12 to 15"
diameter at the ground and at least 60 feet tall. JIM
