One thing your making a convincing argument against, is the selective discontinuance of trains. The axeing of the "Pioneer" hurts other trains too. One think Amtrak never quite figured out. If you killed the Capital Limited tomorrow, numbers on trains like the Chief or the Silver Meteor would be noticeably lower. And yes 80% of a trains business comes from cities outside of the endpoints.
