As appealing as the American highway system is to some, I must tell you right
up to the day it was discontinued in 1979 the Amtrak "Lone Star" (former
Santa Fe Texas Chief) was packing the passengers in. The Conductor and Chair
Car
attendant worked between every stop finding scarce seats for passengers
boarding at Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka, Wichita, etc. thru the night for
folks
bound for Oklahoma City, Norman, Gainesville, Ft. Worth and on to Houston.
That
train was very popular, even under Amtrak to the very end and should have
never been discontinued. It along with the North Coast Hiawatha, National
Limited, and Floridian were discontinued during the Carter Administration.
