Stephen,
You posed an interesting question so I got down my Car Builders' Cyclopedia
20th Edition which contains a Budd advertisement "Trains With A Purpose". There
is a paragraph on Plastics that reads:
"Plastics Budd research and development in molded fiberglass plastics have
revolutionized the interiors of passenger cars, seats, walls, ceilings, and
annexes with all their fixtures, molded in units with this lightweight, strong,
color-impregnated material that never needs paint. The result is substantial
cost savings both in the purchase price of the car and in its maintenance."
This idea helped make the Slumbercoach so effective, as well as used on
interiors of the other cars.
