Hey Bob I would not think that 5wpm could be called "qualified"..for
anything...
.
I started out on the NKP (Nickle Plate) and you had to pass a wire
test at 15 wpm to get a job (1950)..They had a Dispr`s `Phone ckt but
it was the only telephone ckt therefore they could not "patch" around
any wire tble that developed also most of the "Clover Leaf" Divn
that I worked on (StLouis to Toledo) was single track, manual block
and the only teletype ckt was one between Divn ofc at Frankfort Ind &
Genl ofc Cleveland Ohio....

In 1953 I tried to hire out to the Wabash (Western Divn) at Moberly
MO (I had been working 3rd trick morse oprs posn in "DS" relay ofc at
Frankfort Ind and thought I was a pretty fair telgr. (Yup the call
for the telgh ofc Frankfort was "DS" and the Dispatchers ofc there
was "DI")...anyway I wanted to get closer to home (Missouri) so I
went to Moberly to hire out to the Wabash, the only opening they had
was in their Moberly relay ofc "GO" they needed an opr on 2nd trick
the job was abt 90% morse and 10% Teletype...but...because of the
long reports which you had to copy on morse from DesMoines & Council
Bluffs IA & relay (on ptr) to Genl ofc "GM"-StLouis Chief Dspr, G.R.
Greathouse, required you to copy off the morse wire onto the
teletype "iron horse" (tape peferator)...hell I had never touched a
teletype...but I went back to Frankfort and started copying msgs off
the wire onto the teletype perferator (instead of the mill) within a
few weeks I went back to Moberly and got the job..."a hungrey dawg
hunts"
