Drew, as a brief follow-up to the below, before I settled on "historically"
modeling the CB&Q in the early 1960's, I looked back at the historical
records of the CB&Q and subsequent mergers up thru the BNSF of today with
the idea of modeling the "Burlington Route 2000" - esentially how a the CB&Q
would have looked in the late 1990's had it servived as the dominant partner
throughout the merger process. The main historical fact that I changed was
ownership of the CB&Q by the Great Northern / Northern Pacific. My "history"
had the reverse true with a group of Chicago business interests financing
the acquistion of the Great Northern / Northern Pacific / SP&S by the CB&Q
as a route from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest. Those three roads
subsequently became the "Burlington Northern" subsidiary of the "Burlington
Route" (as the CB&Q's corporate identity "officially" became in my version
of the 1970's mergers). The BN kept the same colors as the historical BN -
green and black along with white faces in later years. The Burlington Route
retained the Chinese Red "red bird" Burlington Route paint scheme for it's
locomotives. However, in my fictional history, the Burlington Route merged
the California Zephyr route - the Rio Grande and the Western Pacific. As
intermodal traffic through the Port of Oakland became more important, the
Burlington bought a special fleet of locomotives dedicated to intermodal
traffic, very similar to what the Santa Fe did with it's superfleet. The
Burlington named it's priority intermodal traffic after it's old passenger
service - "Zephyr Service." It also brought back the origional Black and
Grey "black bird" locomotive paint scheme with the "Route of the Zephyrs" on
the side for it's Super Fleet paint scheme. I also put togather a western RR
merger scheme that left the Burlington and the Union Pacific as the two
"survivors" in the western US. About that time I decided that I really liked
F units and high-nose GP's better than SD70MAC's and went back to the early
60's (SD24's don't you know). The only vestige of the Burlington Route 2000
that remains other than in my minds eye is a unit Coal train powered by
SD70MAC's in Chinese Red and an intermodal train with C44-9W's in Black and
Grey on the point that I run on the modular club layout that I belong to.
They are a real attention grabber at public shows.

Model railroading is fun, and you are limited only by your own immagination.

Hello Drew,

You've asked for a whole lot more information than most of us have time to
provide - especially the reasons and logic behind the equipment chosen!

I can give you a briefing on the following:

The paint scheme for the Burlington Northern was chosen to represent the
colors of the northwest forests. The Corporation held considerable
lumbering holdings and the rest of that industry would be a major customer
of the newly formed railroad. It was also chosen because it did not contain
any of the predecessor colors. All of the merger partners experimented with
variations on the paint, some with green, others not. Even after the
merger, there were variations on the scheme - most noticeable on the E
units. I suggest the earliest BN Annual by F. Hol Wagner, published by
Motive Power Services in 1971. The introduction of this booklet has a lot
of the information you seek.

The name came about in a meeting prior to the merger. The railroad that was
going to be a result of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy; Great Northern;
Northern Pacific and the Spokane Portland & Seattle railroads had to that
point been referred to as the "Great Northern, Burlington and Pacific
Railroad" but that fell in disfavor because of its length. In the
referenced meeting, the Manager of passenger operations for the CB&Q
suggested the shortened version "Burlington Northern" and that's what stuck.

For your further research, may I suggest a comprehensive bibliography we
have prepared on our web site at www.BurlingtonRoute.com
<http://www.burlingtonroute.com/> . Also, I may suggest you review the BRHS
's available back-issues that are for sale. You may find some interesting
reading there as well.

Hope this helps!

Subject: [BRHSlist] Information on CB&Q/BN

Howdy gentlemen,

My name is Drew Krager, and I am living in Bensenville, IL (a suburb
of Chicago), while attending college. At this college I have been
requested to do a research paper and I am reporting on the CB&Q (and
at the same time brainstorming for my future layout!). I would like to
do a history of CB&Q/BN, using their decisions as a basis for a
present day CB&Q paint scheme. I am wondering if any of you would
have any suggestions as to where I could find information about either
railroad; why it purchased the equiptment it did; the merger,
specifically why it happened and why they called it what they did:
Burlington Northern. Any information, be it books, journals or simply
talking to a knowledgable person, would be greatly apperciated!

Thanks

Drew Krager
