Steam heat was a big issue with long passenger trains. That's why UP
modified baggage dorms to operate on the rear of the "City of Everywhere".
In addition to the fact that the steam generators in the E units where aging
towards the end of the sixties.
Then you have the platform issue when running combined consists, making
multiple stops at stations to accommodate 2 sets of chair cars and 2 sets of
Pullmans, etc. The Blackhawk/Western Star/Mainstreeter was managable. But
peak
consists of major trains would be more difficult.
