Steam heat was a big issue with long passenger trains.  That's why UP 
modified baggage dorms to operate on the rear of the "City of Everywhere".
In addition to the fact that the steam generators in the E units where aging 
towards the end of the sixties.

Then you have the platform issue when running combined consists, making 
multiple stops at stations to accommodate 2 sets of chair cars and 2 sets of 
Pullmans, etc.  The Blackhawk/Western Star/Mainstreeter was managable.  But 
peak 
consists of major trains would be more difficult.
