Dick wrote 4 hardbounds plus several Burlington articles and bklts -
some for the Q per se, others for his own satisfaction. The best
known of course is "Burlington Route" (often pointed to by business
historians as "the" best business history every accomplished) followed
by "Burlington West", (the Lines West/colonialization documentation)
and "Gulf to Rockies", the book on FtW&D/C&S. His last Q book was
"Perkins/Budd", a comparative bio of the two men and their impact on
the Burlington & its operations.
For the record, "BW" & "Gulf" were written before "BR" but the latter
is a more encompassing book and the one that Bernie Corbin told me
would be the one he would have if left on an island with only one
book! All 4 are written as one would expect by a man who was/is
considered the dean of business historians and who had full access to
Q records and people (having been in the Q's employment from "39-45;
one of the few RR's to hire a historian, much less one with a PhD from
Harvard who later was a full Prof. of History @ Northwestern!). An
aside here, a lot of Q fans are unaware that Dick also held a more
traditional job while with the Burlington, heading up the Relief Dept.
All 4 books are shown in an excellent list of Burlington books at the
BRHS site - I would recommend all 4 to any Q fan, even if you are
strictly a modeler - but don't take my word for it - Bernie had all 4
too!!!
(how else will you learn that back in the 30's the Q, having
successfully started up bus & truck subsidiaries, also tried to get
I.C.C. approval for an airline! or the historical roots and reasons
for there ever being a Zephyr-Rocket? etc etc). Gerald
