Greetings CB&Q fans,

A memory I still have from growing up in northeast Wisconsin a few decades
ago was of a Chinese red CB&Q boxcar spotted at the local feed mill in Casco,
Wis. What made this particular car stand out was 1) that it was a boxcar and
not the typical covered hopper that got spotted at the feed mill about once a
week, and 2) it was 1975 or so, several years after the BN merger. I knew
that the scene couldn't last for long.

Time has erased many of the specifics -- I can't even say with certainty if
it was a 40' or 50' car any more ? but it was definitely red and had the
BURLINGTON ROUTE herald and white BURLINGTON lettering on the car.

I'd like to capture at least the essence of this scene on my 1966-era HO
layout. I know that my description leaves the doors pretty wide open, but
what would YOU recommend as a CB&Q prototype and HO scale model freight car
that would capture the feel of a Chinese red grain loading boxcar from the
1960s?

Because the prototype I saw was spotted at a feed mill, it was probably
fitted with grain doors. And I have enough grain industries on my
GBW-inspired layout that I am willing to dedicate this car with specific
details for grain loading if you think it's appropriate. The best photo I
have found for what captures the essence of what I recall is this CB&Q #47909
boxcar with grain doors in Casco, Wis.:

The Ahnapee & Western engine in the photo would date this image to 1972 or
earlier. But like I said, I can even recall if the car was 40' or 50' for
sure, and I don't recall if it was exterior post or not. What I'm really
trying to do is capture the essence of the scene of a red CB&Q boxcar which
would be spotted at a feed mill in a small Wisconsin town in the mid 1960s.

Although I am not a stickler for rivet counting, I do take a little
satisfaction if I know that the model used is a good match to the prototype
(i.e. I would prefer that if the prototype had 6' doors the model did too;
matching the side sill configuration is nice; and at least an attempt to come
close with the car ends and roof can bring satisfaction). My layout is in
Milwaukee, so there's a good chance that some people who visit the layout
would be familiar with specific CB&Q prototypes.

My modeling experience includes the likes of Red Caboose, Branchline and
Intermountain cars. I am not opposed to using a ready-to-roll model if it
fits the bill. A car preprinted with the CB&Q scheme is nice, but I am not
opposed to painting and decaling the car if that's what it takes to get the
effect I'm looking for.

Thanks for your ideas in this matter,
Mark Mathu
