JUst thought of something still shipped in sacks along with smithing coal -
rail anchors! (and of course spikes still in small metal cans) - inasmuch
as both are for RR's only I've seen them leave foundrys in large wooden open
top crates. As for barrels, for yrs (still today?) Hiram Walker cut & cured
staves for whiskey barrels at facility on SE side of Prairie du Chien for
eventual shipment as whiskey barrels to distillery in Peoria. I know these
went out by rail, at least into early 60's as saw a plant truck transloading
them into Q box car on team track downtown. Do not recall type of box car
but this would have been a 'barrel' car in the good old days & perhaps then
a 40' hi-cube (or ugly duckling as Athearn named them when they came out
with a model). The 40' Q hi-cubes showed up on C&NW (ex-CGW) industrial
park trackage in Dubuque, coming off the Q, in the 60's & 70's. Never did
ck exactly what the loads were.
