Dear Gentlemen,

The discussion about the expensiveness of Q stuff is quite a good example
for the real value of the prototype. At least to me it is an overwhelming
feeling of accomplishment when I finish a "unique" piece of rolling stock
that you can't buy anywhere. I'm 28 years old so many of you would call that
"young" (not Bryan, of course). I have some four years of experience in the
hobby and thats also not much but I learned one thing first: Quality goes a
long way! I'd rather had one real good engine than a whole bunch of toy
trains.

Provided you are a modeler (not only a buyer), choosing the CB&Q is most
rewarding. Ask the BRHS model contest participants! And it is not true that
there is such a shortage of models in my eyes.

The NKP Car Company does it's part, as well as Walthers and others. And
don't forget that the hobby is always moving forward. Now it's Challenger
time, but manufacturers AND customers will move on with new needs. Of
course, popular roads go first, but don't think that only road names decide
about the economical success of a product. I know many folks who buy engines
regardless of the prototype. And one more thing: The Atheran Challenger will
sell for about $500, the Lionel 4-6-6-4 might go as high as $700. The
excellent Challenger imported CB&Q / C&S 2-10-2 is listed at $1.200 - that's
only two plastic and diecast mass products. Model railroading is expensive.
That's a fact!

But maybe it don't have to be: I'll order some brass parts like a
BL-feedwater heater and will try to turn the BLI Mikado into a "Mercedes
Benz" myself.
You want a 2-10-4 ? These are the only brass models on E-bay that seem not
to be bought at all, and you don't have to spend much more than $ 400.

P2K has a lot of models and BLI is comming up with the E's, not to forget
the excellent Athearn F's. Spectrum's "low boiler" version of the 4-6-0 is
not a bad starting point for a K-1 (OTOH not a perfect one *g*).
Take the Athearn 4-6-2 and move steam dome, air pump and running boards, add
an Elesco unit and you could possibly end up with a C&S Pacific. Budget: Not
more than $ 200
Cars & Cabeese are well covered by the firms, so what keeps you out of the
"machine shop" ?

Just one listers opinion

Cheers!
