To All:

I have uploaded some photographs that I have taken of Havelock Baggage Car 1030
to the BRHS Photos section today. This car is in the siding in Wataga, IL. I
first noticed it a couple of years ago. According to Burlington Bulletin No.
36, this car was built 02/14/1951 and was converted to BN 976108 in 08/1973.
On page 55, in the lower right hand corner, is a photograph of this car in
10/1981.

When I first noticed this car, it was coupled to another baggage type car. All
of the doors on both cars were intact and I assume these cars were used for
storage. In photo Havelock 1, I have a shot of the car when I first noticed it.

While on patrol in Wataga one day, I noticed that the other baggage car that
was coupled to the Havelock car had been cut down to the frame with a torch.
Fearing that this might be the next step for the Havelock car, I returned last
month to record what might be its final days. In photo Havelock 6, I have a
shot of the other baggage car.

In Havelock 3, laying on the ground to the right of the car is a pile of
debris. Contained in this debris is the doors to the Havelock car. In looking
at the debris and the interior of the car, it appears that someone had set fire
to the inside. The wood part of the floor of the car is charred and completely
gone in some spots. The only thing left in the car was a bunch of scrap and
several metal cabinets. In one cabinet is three shelves full of old glass
insulators used on telegraph/electricity poles.

I am not sure what is going to happen to the car. BNSF has a small shanty and
a fenced in area with spare signals and other parts next to the cars. I will
be keeping an eye on the car. I would guess that there are not too many
Havelock Baggage Cars left. And I thought it worth mentioning.
