For a couple of years during the 70's the IHB decided on a method
of handling the BN interchange at La Grange.

The 4:00 p.m. crew from Gibson would be replaced by a 11:00 p.m.
Argo crew. The Gibson crew would be taxied to some other task and
go back east and the Argo crew would both deliver and pull the BN.

One very cold night the rear brakeman was a little late getting out of
the office and he was not the type to go running after some caboose
just to avoid the train stopping. The Conductor, who by no means was
a "Company Man" just put the train in emergency from the rear to give
his partner a chance to catch up.

This resulted in two broken knuckles. The head end was already
North of the AT&SF diamond with the rest of the train across the
Des Plaines River bridge, the Sanitary & Ship Canal bridge, and
the C&A diamond. Needless to say that both broken knuckles
were on bridges.

Train was finally delivered to the BN about 5:30 a.m. After that night
that crew change was always handled as a firm positive stop with
the rear end.
