Simple question (maybe):
The diesel locomotives (not counting the F's and E's) ordered by the
Q were somewhat unique in that they had no drop steps for walking
between couple units. In fact, they actually had a solid bar across
the center area of the front and rear handrails where a chain would
usually be hanging to work in conjunction with the drop steps. This
being the case, how could the train crew move between locomotives if
they had a unit shut down enroute or some other problem? Were they
required to stop the train and move between units on the ground?
Interestingly, BN added the drop steps very quickly to all the ex-Q
locomotives, but how did it work before then?
