David,
Aproximately a year or so ago, a good number of the whalebelly fleet
were here in Garretson and Sioux Falls, South Dakota - on the BNSF
Corson sub. There is a private shop called Midwest Rail Repair on
the line and they have been doing work for a lot of smaller roads
and also have landed some BNSF, CP, UP, & DM&E work too!
Out of the blue the whalebelly's began showing up. Frankly, I was
stunned!!! I don't recall who they were being re-stencilled from and
to, but coming in, their BN markings (in a couple of different BN
paint schemes) was very apparent.
I may have shot 2 whole rolls total, over a couple of weeks time,
including one Saturday morning climbing all over a couple of them,
while no-one was around (Shsh - don't tell anyone). I did get quite
a few detail shots.
The only problem is, these car's were really beat up and weathered
to the max. While the BN paint was able to be seen, the cars had a
good 20 years of grime and dust and cement and rust on top of it.
Going out, they had all of their appendedges repaired and were all
painted pristine. They looked like brand new cars! Amazing...
The rumor was that the cars were being refurbished for Betonnite
(sp) service in Western SD. and Wyoming on the DM&E, but owned by a
private source.
If you (or the group) are interested, I can go dig the pix out and
post 'em.
