I have the impression that the bulk of autos came out the side doors rather
than the ends, which required a siding with a ramp or platform on the
end....and shuffling of cars to unload them.
The double door cars were used for this purpose, although I personally would
not want to unload cars (which were packed into the car diagonally to
maximize the number of cars in a boxcar using "auto loaders", folding
ramp/lifting devices, some made by Evans). It would be great if a
illustrated set of instructions showing how to load and unload a car using
these devices were republished for us to see!!!
