Paul,
There are several variables in how different folks apply the ballast. With
that in mind, the figure of 10 feet per bag is a pretty safe estimate. This
is what it takes me using the #2T bag on code 83 track over cork roadbed.
This allows for coverage of the cork on both sides of the track. If you're
working on yard track, the bags will go much further. Of, course, if you
have any left over, you will always use it later when you have to make those
inevitable "changes" :-)
Your assumptions are correct, Q Connection will have the ballast available
for sale in Mendota. When you determine how much you think you'll need, let
me know so I can make sure I bring enough along with me to cover your needs.
Unfortunately, Manchester was sold recently and the price per bag has
increased to $2.99 per bag, but I feel it is still a bargain!
As I said before I'm using the #2 ballast on my mainline. This equates to
approximately 3/4" diameter ballast. The #1 in HO would be 1/2" or less, and
the #0 even finer. I'm planning on using the #1 for my gravel roads and the
#0 for sand on the Mississippi River bank.
As far as using the Manchester ballast for your branch line, you could use
the #1T to show a contrast, but the coloration would be the same. Maybe by
using a stain to darken the branch line's color a bit would work? They also
sell a gray color, but it is not as available as the tan, but if you wanted
it, I'll try to get it.
