Considering some of the scary places some of the switch crews had to work in
I'm not surprised they did. I was told that years ago a switchman was
killed up in the alley at Peoria. Of course this is hearsay and don't know
if it was in the " line of duty", but none the less it was a wild place
years ago. The same was true back in my merchant marine days. Cargo mates
were known to carry a Berretta or some sort of 38 while working the docks in
Brooklyn or Hoboken.
