If I remember correctly ... WCFL (Chicago Federation of Labor) was at 1000
on the AM dial and WLS was at 890. In the 70's they were rival stations for
teen rock and roll audience. Remember how happy CFL was when they got Larry
Lujak to switch? The adds ... "The Super-Jock has left the Rock (WLS)"?
How devastating!
At night, WLS went clear channel and could be heard pretty much everywhere in the country (used to sit in the back seat of the car on the way to Minnesota and hope it would go clear channel before we got to Tomah WI). WCFL, I was told, boosted it's power at night, but only toward the east coast. Some regulations there, I guess. Talking about clear channel stations ... we have WCCO (830) up here in the north land. Stands for Washburn Crosby Co (the original General Mills - my current employer). WCFL had the daytime hours. They were owned by the Chicago Federation of Labor. And WLS also featured the WLS Barn Dance from the 8th Street Theater on Saturday evenings. Many great early stars got their start there. WLS also carried Studs Terkel after midnite which fantastic music of the 1920s and 1930s. Studs rhymed his comments. Then the whole shebang went to h--l in a handbasket when rock and roll came onto the scene. (VBG) At 12:10 PM 10/29/2002, you wrote:>Could get WLS in Delaware in 1964/65.
