Tom,
I know this does not really help but the 3 or 4 times a day
"Pingers" from Dubuque to East Cabin would certainly
have gone thru a tunnel every trip.
That would be an interesting location to model but very difficult
to try and get the river bridge worked in. The geography is a
little strange with the IC pointed towards the Northwest before
they reach East Cabin. Then they take a slight turn to the right
to enter the tunnel and then a quarter turn or more within the
tunnel. At the same time the "Q" is taking about a quarter turn
to the right around the bluff and the diamond ends up being
almost a perfect 90 degrees. This gives them a right angle
crossing of the river which, of course, makes for the shortest
bridge. An elegant solution to an engineering problem and I
don't think you could do it any better today.
Of course CB&Q transfers would have also gone through the
tunnels going up the hill in St Paul on the NP.
