A 6-December-42 timetable shows #21 at St Paul at 3:15 p.m.

Some interesting scheduling. At East Dubuque it is 40 mph
from the depot across the IC diamond and over the East end
of the CB&Q center siding, then 70 mph until clear of the West
end of the center siding. Speed then goes up to 95 mph with
60 mph over the CMStP&P diamond at Crawford and 20 mph
from 239.00 to the Prairie Du Chien depot at 239.66.

Scheduled stop to stop is 39" for 54.61 miles which is a
scheduled 84 mph. Why is that interesting? At least half
of that distance is around curves at the bottom of bluffs.
This is still rather rugged and isolated territory. Don't know
how much slide fence was in place at that time but that's
awfully fast to be going around blind curves on faith.

The usual caution is there that the Zephyr type motor trains
have to slow to 60 mph to pick up orders. I have hooped up
orders to uncounted freight trains going 60 but there you
only need two sets and there was always plenty of time
between head end and rear end. A passenger train would
require 3 sets, (one for the flagman), and those trains were
very short. On the occasions that I had to give orders to
Amtrak they would slow down to about 25 and were longer
trains but you still needed a couple of extra arms to juggle
3 hoops. With passenger trains there is also the problem
of not knowing which car the Conductor will be in.
