Leo,
My wife's Aunt was a Nurse/Hostess (or whatever they called them) for the
Chief/El Capitan in 1957/8. She was on duty the whole trip and was assigned
a small compartment to try and grab what sleep she could. I also got the
impression that the sleeping car porters did the same. They had a quick turn
around in California and then back to Chicago. They then received a bunch of
days off before the next trip.
There was a oral history of Pullman Porters - Those Pullman Blues: An Oral
History of the African-American Railroad Attendant (available at Amazon.com).
I read a few years ago and it was quite informative.
