Thanks for the additional input....I'm still not quite understanding the
whole thing, but it is not going to effect the quality of my life for the
foreseeable future.
I recall a "true tale" in one of the old RAILROAD MAGAZINES where a local had
headed in clearing the time of a hotshot freight train. Said local was doing
station switching and had all of their train in behind the freight house.
Local also did not know that the train they were clearing was running in
sections.
The hotshot, when he went by the station where the local was switching did
not see another train so he did not whistle signals (long and two shorts for
today's railroaders). The local crew, of course, heard the hotshot go by,
but didn't see his head end "carrying the green".
Local was ready to leave town and pulled down to head out and were still just
barely in the clear when they heard the second section approaching and hence
got stopped before they had fouled the main track.
Teller of the tale remarked that had they been ready to go a couple of
minutes sooner they would have had the main line fouled and a disaster would
have occurred.
It's not as much fun or interesting today, but it's much more safe.
