Confirming Brad's comment re Rock Island suburban trains...They were indeed
called dummies. However this was a railroad term and would probably not have
been used by the "traveling public".
Also as a side comment....most commuters didn't refer to their trains by
number or name, but by time at their station. ie I take the 7:18. This
was common on all railroads and also in a far distant (and maybe better) time
trains at small towns were referred to in the same manner.
