I used a long McHenry plastic coupler. 1) cut off the end that sits in the
coupler box, so you are just left with the shaft, which will slide into the
Athern opening. 2) Then drill a small hole through the pilot and coupler
shaft. 3) insert a piece of brass wire into hole.

This will give you an operating coupler, which fits the existing Athern
pilot. It will pivot slightly on the wire pin, allowing some coupler swing.

I have done a four so far, and they have all survived nurmeous op sessions.

On a side note the 2-8-2 runs great as the mechanism was done by Samhongsa
of Brass fame. It has a can motor and flywheel. The only difficulty I have
is the engine is so light (plastic boiler) it will only pull about 10-11
cars up my 2% grade.
